Hicksville Historical Society (HHS) is made up of individuals, groups, & businesses dedicated to preserving Hicksville, Ohio's story. It is managed by a Board of Directors who are local residents passionate about connecting with our past. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in local history.
Hicksville’s Historical Society got its start in the 1970s when area citizens formed “The Friends of St. Paul’s," a group dedicated to rescuing the 1875 Episcopal Church from its dilapidated state. This group’s hard work resulted in the building being added to the National Register of Historic Places. A decade later, the group expanded their mission and changed their name to The Hicksville Historical Society, Inc.
Today, HHS helps maintain St. Paul's Church in cooperation with the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, & houses historical items in The Hicks Land Office, maintained in conjunction with Johnson Memorial Library. We participate in community activities throughout the year, & provide tours by appointment. HHS hosts tours for organizations, offers a badge for the Tiger Cubs, & visits with 3rd graders each year in conjunction with their local history studies.The group will feature historical displays at Johnson Memorial Library to highlight the Village, its people, & their amazing accomplishments. Additionally, HHS helps with various local historical projects upon request.
The Historical Society has three goals:
1. Generating interest in local history;
2. Preserving local historical buildings
3. Preserving items important to local history
Past projects include Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame inductions, photographic assistance for the Huber curtain restoration, research for and coaching Youth Theatre workshops, displays & exhibits, Advent services, local photographs for Defiance County projects, the “Building Doctors” restoration workshop, speeches, & providing resources for historic markers.
Projects are funded by donations & special promotions. Both monetary & in-kind donations are sincerely appreciated, and help further our goal of preserving Hicksville's past.
Both St. Paul’s Church and The Land Office are located at the edge of Hicksville’s business district on West High Street. Our mailing address is The Hicksville Historical Society, PO Box 162, Hicksville, OH 43526.
Hicksville's heritage is worth preserving! We are justifiably proud of our past, & hope to pass that on to future generations.
